Art for Beginners | Woodblock and Linocut Printmaking Made Easy | with Julia Flanagan

Learn relief printmaking techniques to produce limited edition works on paper. Woodblock and Lino cut are simple processes which get great results and are easy to continue at home. Over this course you will use three different types of plates used in relief printmaking and experiment with imagery, printing and colour. Students should bring along any ideas, in the form of drawings, their own photographs (or similar) to create imagery. No experience needed, just your imagination and desire to try something new.

what to expect

In this course you will learn:

  • Printmaking press OH+S
  • about image selection, design and composition
  • how to transfer the image/artwork onto lino/wood block
  • how to carve the lino/ wood block
  • how to ink your plate and print your image in different ways
  • to print using the printing press
  • to print without the press using hand methods such as a using a baron or the back of a wooden spoon
  • about printing an edition

Is this course right for me?

This course is for all levels. The most important thing is an enthusiasm to learn a wonderful medium. Students can expect to learn the fundamentals of three printmaking techniques and take home a stunning portfolio of limited edition prints, ready to frame.

About our printmaking facilities

We have two printing presses suitable for intaglio and relief printing techniques. At our school we teach ‘safe’ printmaking techniques. That is, we don’t use acid baths or aqua-tinting boxes with resin.


Standard block printing ink colours will be provided
Students will need to bring:

For the first class:

  • silk cut lino (30x30cm)
  • lino and wood carving tool set
  • good quality printmaking paper (Stonehenge 30 X 22 245gsm White (2-3 Sheets)
  • roller (about 10inch wide)
  • sketch book
  • drawings that you might like to make into prints
  • extra paper for test prints
  • drawing materials (pencils, erasers, fine point marker)
  • masking tape
  • disposable gloves.

Later you will need:

  • small wood blocks for carving

Our term classes are held in our spacious studios.
