Oil Painting Made Easy! | Kevin McKay
This workshop demystifies traditional materials and methods, and leads students through the essential skills of objective painting with a series of still life tonal studies. You will learn how to paint objects from life in correct proportion, the secrets of perspective and how to render the effect of light and shadow that will bring convincing 3-D illusion to your canvas.
Is this course right for me?
This class is designed for those new to painting, artists wishing to refresh their oil painting skills or those who have experience with another paint medium who would like to learn about using oil paints. High School students in year 9 and above are encouraged to attend this workshop.
Included in the course fee is use of our oil paints, mediums, palettes, brushes. You will also be provided with several canvases or canvas paper.
Please bring the following items with you:
A visual diary or notepad and pencil
2 or 3 glass jars WITH screw lids (about normal jam jar size). This is for mixing solvents and cleaning up.
Some clean rags (about the size of a serviette)
Recommended: disposable gloves (to wear while painting to keep paint and turpentine away from skin, or use barrier cream)
Recommended: an apron or old shirt (or wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on).

How do I enrol and pay? Online enrolment and payment is preferred. Click the Enrol button to add class/es to your shopping cart. Can I get a refund if I cancel a workshop? Can I swap to a different workshop if something comes up? Please read our cancellation and refund policy in our terms and conditions carefully.
Do you offer any discounts for seniors or other discounts? Seniors card holders and pension card holders are entitled to a 5% discount on workshops. Card number must be provided at the check out for the discount to apply. Students enrolled in a full 8 week term course receive a 10% discount on any adults weekend workshop in the same term.
Can I get lunch/coffee nearby? For full day workshops, we suggest bring your own lunch, drinks snacks. The kitchen is equipped with a fridge, microwave oven, sandwich press and small toaster oven. Tea and coffee facilities are available.
What should I wear? We recommend wearing flat, close toed shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on! We do have aprons for use. The art studios have heaters and fans, but no air-conditioning. So dress warm for winter and cool for summer.
When should I arrive? The school will be open 15 minutes before the commencement of your class.
Can I park close by? Art Est. is located on a small light industrial estate with free onsite parking and plenty of unmetered street parking. Directly outside the front door are designated ‘Art Est’ spaces along with general visitor tandem parking opposite the front door. Visit our About Us page for public transport options.
