Oil Painting Essentials and Beyond | Marie Mansfield

Course overview

This short course and is suitable for absolute beginners wanting to learn to paint with oils, but don’t know where to start as well as continuing students who will gain greater confidence in using oils. Over this 4 week stage, you will learn to paint with oil paints through a range of exercises designed to teach you the fundamentals and gain confidence week by week. Exercises will continue so students will learn to observe light, tone and proportion to bring a sense of reality and atmosphere to their work. Marie Mansfield is an award winning artist who specialises in oils.

What to expect

Students will learn through demonstration and practice the fundamentals of painting with oils including:
How to start and finish a painting
How to paint a still-life
Understand tone
How to mix colours
Composition and more

Is this course right for me?

Suitable for those new to painting or with experience in other mediums who would like to learn to paint with oils. Suitable for new and continuing students.


Students will need to have the following:

Titanium White and Raw umber acrylic paint for the ‘mid-tone ground’ to prepare the surface for painting.
A painting palette (melamine)
A palette knife
1 × 500ml bottle of ODOURLESS solvent
Rags or a roll of paper towel
One or two jam jars with lids for mixing solvents and clean up
You will need several canvases or canvas boards over the term. For the first class bring along a canvas or canvas board approx 10x12 inches
Paint brushes: long flat brushes (synthetic) in sizes 4, 6 and 8

Oil paints:
If you already have oil paints bring what you have to the first lesson. If you don’t already have oil paints the following is a good selection of colours that will keep you going (small tubes are fine).
For the first lesson please bring Raw Umber and white.

Recommended list:
Titanium White or Zinc White, Ivory Black, Burnt Sienna, yellow ochre.
COOL COLOURS: Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Cerulean Blue (hue will do)
WARM COLOURS: Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue
Buying cheap paints is a waste of money – we recommend purchasing ‘Artist’ quality paints Art Spectrum is a good economical brand.

For Term 3, our regular classes will return to studio based learning. A limited number of classes will be online in our Virtual Zoom Art Room. The venue is listed with the class details so please check this before enrolling.

For studio based classes, extra measures are in place for your health and well being.
