The Human Figure from Life in Watercolour Workshop | Tanya Baily

h3. Course Overview
Feeling ambitious and wanting to apply your watercolour and drawing skills to the live model! – here is your chance. This workshop is an intense two days of painting the human figure and the portrait from life, with an emphasis on using the beautiful medium of watercolour.

Workshop Delivery This workshop will take place over two days in Art Est studios

What to expect *Day 1 begins with the nude model and some rigorous drawing practice, understanding proportions and how to render the figure most efficiently using watercolour brush line, brush marks and washes. During the afternoon, students will have time to complete a watercolour painting from a single longer pose, with the model clothed and staged. Tanya will discuss a range of techniques with the class, including paint application and colour mixing options. Students will be encouraged to develop a style of their own.

*Day 2 is all about the portrait and composition, with students practising both a classic head and shoulders pose as well as a full figure using a more narrative approach. The day starts with some sketching concentrating on the proportions of the head and face and practising techniques from day 1. Guided by discussion from Tanya, and with reference to watercolour artists (both past and contemporary), students will practice a range of expressive watercolour techniques and will gain tips on how to best compose their portraits to add meaning. The afternoon will be spent completing a watercolour portrait from a longer pose.

What you will learn

Students will:

*Gain tips and confidence in painting people directly from life, including quickly rendering proportion and effective colour mixing for skin tones.

  • Practice and learn a range of watercolour skills, and understand how to use composition, colour and the unique qualities of watercolour to enhance meaning and likeness to their watercolour portraits.

Is this course right for me? This workshop is suitable for students who have experience in watercolour painting and would like to explore, or are new to, figure painting. This workshop is not suitable for beginners to watercolour.

Recommended Material List *Paint Colours: tubes or dry palettes

Basic essential colours: pthalo blue (Windsor blue green shade), ultramarine blue, lemon yellow, Quinacrodone gold, permanent rose (Or Alizarin Crimson)

Students are welcome to bring other previously owned or preferred colours. Handy additions might include: pthalo green (Windsor green blue shade), Cadmium red.

Your tutor recommends brands like Winsor and Newton, Schminke, Daniel Smith (or equivalent quality). Student quality watercolour paints are cheaper but are made with inks and synthetic dyes, not pigments. They don’t last as long or work as well and the colour quality is not good.

*Paint Brushes: Synthetic quality watercolour brushes are fine, approx sizes 1, 4, 8, and 12.
*Palette: One 6-8 pan palette (deeper pan watercolour palettes are recommended)
*Paper: Ideally, a mix of
-cheaper watercolour sketch paper (min weight 200gsm). Common brands are Reeves and Canson.
-300gsm, 100% Cotton, cold-pressed, medium grain watercolour paper. Common brands are Arches and Fabriano.

Please bring a range of pre-owned and preferred papers if you have them.

  • HB Pencil
  • Rubber
