Is this course right for me?

This class is great for beginners, and also those with some experience who want to expand their use of drawing and painting media. High School students in years 10 and above are welcome to attend this course.

Materials

Art materials are not included in the course fee. Students will need to supply their own materials. Occasionally the tutor will introduce a new medium in class which will be provided.

Students should bring the following to class each week:

1x 56cmx76cm best quality 100% Cotton 300gsm medium grain watercolour paper
1x pad A4 size cheaper student-quality watercolour paper (10-15 sheets).
Artist quality watercolour paints such as Windsor and Newton, Art Spectrum, Daniel Smith, Schminke or Old Holland. In 5ml tubes: Raw Sienna, Lemon Yellow, Windsor Red (or cadmium red), Alizarin Crimson, Prussian Blue, Ultramarine Blue. This is a basic set of warm/cool colours. If you already have watercolour paints bring what you have.

NOTE: Please buy quality paints such as Windsor and Newton, Art Spectrum, Daniel Smith, Schminke or Old Holland. Cheap paint sets that you find in a discount/variety store do not have much pigment so are extremely difficult to work with and you will not be able to achieve the results you need.

*Large Deep pan Watercolour palette- minimum 8 pans
*One set (12 pencils) of good quality watercolour/Aquarelle pencils (Tutor recommends Faber Castell and Caran D’Ache)
*Brushes: synthetic watercolour brushes are fine: size 4, 8 and 12
*2 clean jars or containers for water
*Pencil (HB, B or 2B), eraser, ruler, masking tape, sharpener
*Sketchbook or paper for drawing up composition plans.
*One roll of kitchen roll absorbent paper

Other materials you can expect to buy during the course (as indicated by the teacher):

Masking fluid
Calligraphy/drawing pen
Ink(s)
Larger range of brushes
Different watercolour and other papers
Other colour pigments

Course testimonials:

  • Excellent tutor. Highly qualified, experienced teacher who models, provides examples, encourages and sets students off on their painting journey. Clear voice and plenty of individual attention.
  • Tanya was very encouraging but at the same time set challenging tasks that enabled me to get a good feel for the techniques. I also appreciated her teaching us some colour theory and demonstrating how to mix colours in class. I really enjoyed the classes and have been inspired to practice at home. I'm looking forward to engaging with more classes at Artest.
