Drawing | The Essentials and Beyond for Beginners | Jan Handel
A beginners introduction to the fundamental principles of drawing. In a relaxed and friendly environment students will:
- explore line, tone, scale and composition – the building blocks of drawing
- improve observation skills with quick and loose sketches and more sustained drawings
- learn to use charcoal, and use the eraser as a drawing tool
- draw with a variety of mark making tools designed to your mark making
- take home a small body of both short sketches and sustained drawings
- take home a new found confidence in how to draw objectively and development of their own visual language.
Is this course right for me?
This class is suitable for enthusiastic beginners as well as those who have attended a beginner workshop and would like to extend their skills.
High School visual art students in year 9 and are also encouraged to attend this workshops.
Drawing materials and drawing paper are included in the course fee. If you have some drawing materials you would like to use or be shown how to use, feel free to bring these along.

How do I enrol and pay? Online enrolment and payment is preferred. Click the Enrol button to add class/es to your shopping cart. Proceed to check out to complete your enrolment details and pay by secure payment gateway. Visa card or Master card only. If you prefer to enrol and pay over the phone, call us on 02 9564 1519.
Can I get a refund if I cancel a workshop? Can I swap to a different workshop if something comes up? Please read our cancellation and refund policy in our terms and conditions carefully.
Do you offer any discounts for seniors or other discounts? Seniors card holders and pension card holders are entitled to a 5% discount on workshops. Card number must be provided at the check out for the discount to apply. Students enrolled in a full 8 week term course receive a 10% discount on any adults weekend workshop in the same term.
Can I get lunch/coffee nearby? For full day workshops, we suggest bring your own lunch, drinks snacks. The kitchen is equipped with a fridge, microwave oven, sandwich press and small toaster oven. Tea and coffee facilities are available.
What should I wear? We recommend wearing flat, close toed shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on! We do have aprons for use. The art studios have heaters and fans, but no air-conditioning. So dress warm for winter and cool for summer.
When should I arrive? The school will be open 15 minutes before the commencement of your class.
Can I park close by? Art Est. is located on a small light industrial estate with free onsite parking and plenty of unmetered street parking. Directly outside the front door are designated ‘Art Est’ spaces along with general visitor tandem parking opposite the front door. Visit our About Us page for public transport options.
