Ceramics | Wheel Throwing Pottery Introduction | one day workshop

Workshop overview:

If you’ve always wanted to have a go at wheel throwing pottery, then this is introductory workshop is for you. In this workshop you will learn and practice the basics and you’re sure to get hooked!
This session is suitable for absolute beginners or those who have already had a go and would like to practice under the guidance of a tutor.

What to expect:

  • watch demonstrations by your tutor who will show you step by step what to do
  • learn how to prepare your clay (wedging)
  • practise the fundamental techniques of wheel throwing including: centering and shaping
  • practise throwing simple cylinders (pots and bowls)
  • be introduced to basic surface decoration techniques

What should I wear?

Wear old closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes you are relaxed about getting clay on. For wheel throwing, best to wear comfortable pants/trousers as you’ll sit close to the wheel as you throw.
Bring an apron.
We also recommend you trim your nails first (no guarantees that your manicure will last when working with clay!)

What should I bring?

Your apron.
An old hand towel

What is included?

Your fee includes all tutoring materials, clay, bisque and a follow up glazing session and glaze firing.

Will my vessels be fired?

Included in your fee is the firing of up to six vessels of your choice. You can have more vessels fired for an additional fee of $15 per piece. Vessels made on the day will need to dry before being bisque fired and this could take a couple of weeks. We will notify students when their work is fired and ready for collection or so that you can book in for a glazing session.
