Pottery Wheel and Ceramics | Beyond the basics

Course overview

This short course is for students with previous wheel throwing experience who want to learn more by refining and build on existing skills. Students can work with your tutor to solve problem areas, practice working with larger amounts of clay, throwing forms and vessels of different shapes and sizes and integrating handbuilding techniques with the wheel to alter forms; learn new finishing and clay decoration techniques.

Our purpose built ceramics studio is equipped with 8 wheels. Clay can be purchased at the workshop, a limited number of glazes are available and work is kiln fired on the premises. There is a maximum of 8 students in this class.

Is this course right for me?

This class is for students who have previously attended wheel throwing classes and are comfortable with wedging, centering clay and throwing small vessels but want to learn more.

Materials and Kiln Firing

Included in the course fee:
Students will be provided with a half bag of clay each (5kg) to enable completion of 3-4 vessels. Additional clay may be purchased at $20 a 10kg bag.
You will be able to use our pottery tools during the workshop, or you if you already have a set bring what you have.
3-4 objects (size dependent) will be bisque fired in our on site kilns.

Students then have the option to enrol in a glazing session (Fee $20)

All students should bring:

a full length apron
an old hand towel
a large sponge (car wash size).
a thick kitchen sponge cut into four pieces
a plastic storage container with a lid is useful to keep your materials together (about 40cmx30cmx15cm high) (eg from Ikea, officeworks or a discount shop)
a notebook to take notes and sketch your ideas

wear old closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes you are relaxed about getting clay on. For wheel throwing, best to wear comfortable pants/trousers as you’ll sit close to the wheel as you throw.

Unless otherwise noted, clay is supplied for ceramic workshops and this is included in your fees, however there may be other items to bring, so please review course description carefully.
