Course overview

This course is for new and continuing students who would like use the pottery wheel to make functional pottery and ceramics. Functional ceramics refers to object you may use everyday, for special occasions or as decoration. Objects include plates, vases, cups, bowls, jugs, saucers etc. New students with no prior ceramic experience are welcome and encouraged to attend. New students will learn and practise the fundamentals of pottery wheel throwing: preparing clay, centering clay on the wheel, turning or trimming. Continuing students or those with experience elsewhere will build on their skills, work on problem areas, learn new techniques and begin to develop their own projects based on their particular interests. All students will be introduced to a range of decorative techniques for their objects, learn about glazing and finishing.

Our ceramics studio is equipped with 8 wheels. Clay can be purchased at the workshop, a limited number of glazes are available and work is kiln fired on the premises. There is a maximum of 8 students in this class.
Students will work on projects, building their skills and confidence from week to week.

Shinhee Ma specialises in wheel thrown contemporary sculptural wares that are playful and functional for everyday use.

What to expect

Beginners will learn and practise fundamental skills: preparing clay, centering and trimming, building confidence and skills week by week.
Continuing students build on existing skills, develop new skills and develop their own projects.
Students can expect to have several completed objects at the end of the term.

Maximum of 8 students.

Is this course right for me?

This new course is for students with little or no experience working with clay. The class is suitable for new and continuing students. Continuing students will build on their skills and begin to develop their own projects based on their particular interests.

What should I wear?

Wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes you are relaxed about getting clay on.
Bring an apron.

What should I bring?

A notebook to take notes and sketch your ideas
Reference images if you like
A sponge and an old hand towel
A few plastic grocery bags to wrap your clay artworks and leftover clay
A plastic storage container with a lid is useful to keep your materials together (about 40cmx30cmx15cm high) (eg from Ikea, officeworks or a discount shop)

What materials will be provided?

Students will be provided with a bag of clay each and basic glazes to use in this introductory class to enable completion of several projects across the term. Extra supplies can be purchased if needed.

Additional clay may be purchased at $5 per 2kg (or $20 a 10kg bag)
Pottery tool sets are available for purchase at $15.
Additional glazes are available for a small fee.

Will my vessels be fired?

Included in your fee is the firing of two vessels of your choice.
You can have more vessels fired for an additional fee. These will be charged by weight at $5 per kilo per firing (paid at the time of firing). It may take take two firings to complete your work.

Maximum of 12 students in all our classes. Wheel throwing classes have a maximum of 8 students Our class sizes are small, ensuring you receive the individual tuition you need. For most ceramics classes clay is supplied to complete several projects and this is included in your course fees. Additional clay can be purchased if required.
