Course Overview

This is an energetic and expansive workshop with Sydney-based artist Renata Pari-Lewis. In this workshop, students can expect to gain from Renata's expressive style that combines drawing and painting with acrylics, gouache and collage.

Renata's work emphasises the mood and emotion of a space; rather than the literal depiction of a subject, she is interested in pursuing a diverse repertoire of mark-making and a dynamic set of chromatic and tonal relationships that can accurately evoke the atmosphere and mood of a subject or scenario; a kind of theatre in which the lighting and composition direct the viewer to a particular aspect of the individual and the space they inhabit.

Renata has previously taught at the Art Gallery of NSW, Waverley Woollahra Art School as well as working as an educator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney.

What to expect

  • look at the work of modernist and contemporary artists working in collage and mixed media
  • focus on how to build and balance the composition
  • have a chance to loosen up and learn to look and see more broadly
  • experiment with a variety of drawn and painted gestural marks
  • through demonstration, learn to mix and understand colour and its tonal relationships
  • learn about a variety of materials and techniques and how to archivally combine them
  • experiment and find new ways of seeing to get you outside your comfort zone
  • learn about the process of developing an idea, collecting source material and references, experimenting with different techniques and approaches, before the final execution.

Is this workshop right for me?

All levels of artist are welcome. Be prepared to work loose and experiment.

Renata will provide image resource materials. Please bring the following:

For the composition studies:

  • black, grey and off-white paper (torn-out pages from an old book are also great if you have some)
  • charcoal or/and black pencil

 For the mixed media painting:

  • box board / or mat board /or primed canvas or board (depends on the preference of the student, small to medium size A4/A3)
  • you can buy box board in most art shops. It is a grey cardboard that comes in several thicknesses and sizes, so can be bought large and cut to smaller sizes, is cheap and great to work on, so is recommended. Mat board is slightly more expensive. It comes in different colours but we recommend warm white if you choose this option.
  • Watercolour paper or sketch pad
  • Acrylic paints. If you already have acrylic paints, bring what you have. If you don't have acrylic paints, the following is a good general purpose colour list: Titanium White, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Yellow Light Hansa, Yellow Deep, Matisse Red Light, Brilliant Alizarin (Crimson). For better results, we recommend buying ‘artist quality’ paints (Matisse Derivan Acrylics are a reasonably good quality brand) _
  • Gouache
  • Brushes - these do not need to be expensive but you will need some flat brushes in a variety of sizes
  • Colour pencils
  • Eraser
  • A bottle of acid-free craft glue
  • Scraps of paper for collage (variety of size and colour). Japanese rice paper is fantastic if you have some
  • Rags or paper towels
