Still Life | Observation and Imagination | Painting, Drawing and Mixed Media | Sally Mowbray

Course overview

A drawing and painting course with another dimension that aims to expand on the possibilities of the still life genre and to use it as a vehicle for expression, symbolism and storytelling. In this class students will be helped to play with scale and perspective and arrange still life sets made from unusual and also traditional materials. These will form the subject for painting and drawing. Be inspired by artists such as Claudia Carr and Victor Willing (UK) and whose work uses the still life to create narrative. For students with little experience this will also serve as an introduction to the use of acrylic paint/mixed media/drawing. Students who already paint in oils could use these if preferred, but simple adaptions will be needed regarding the order in which mixed media elements are incorporated.

We will look for the narrative and lyrical possibilities of various subject matters and then respond using a combination of drawing painting and collage. Students will be encouraged to bring their own objects (figurines, vessels, natural history, fabric scraps etc) to class for use in personal still life composition (in combination with our Art Est studio objects).

Found objects, chance arrangements, dramatic and subtle content, composition, will be explored in projects designed to help students develop a personal aesthetic with a chance to take the work into a degree of abstraction. This is a mixed ability class.

What to expect

Each week students will learn new concepts and techniques including:

  • observational drawing techniques, paint handling and colour mixing practice
  • drawing skills working from simple still life objects and learning skills that can ultimately be used to draw anything!
  • foundation painting skills working from simple still life objects and progressing to other genres
  • different approaches to painting compositions using traditional and contemporary ideas and methods
