Drawing for Beginners with Sally Mowbray

An entry level course where you will be able to learn and practice a broad base of drawing skills. No prior experience is necessary. Your tutor will demonstrate and describe all processes with plenty of time for questions and repeat practice.
What to expect
Each week will have a different focus that builds on previous learnings. Students can expect to work from primary subject matter as opposed to reproduction including the following subjects:
- Still Life sets to observe and measure basic forms
- Studio lit objects to observe tone, surface, shadow
- Interior spaces to observe angles and architecture
- District views from our upstairs studio windows
- Local Whites Creek park to practice drawing in the landscape
- Sketch book work - expect to fill a sketchbook with notes, practice sketches and sustained drawings
What will you achieve
Over the 8 weeks of this course students will learn the following:
- Drawing objects in proportion using sighting and measuring techniques
- Checking and reproducing angles and other non symmetric shapes
- Observing negative space
- Practicing expressive mark making and quality of line
- Observation and notation of tone
- Incorporating colour into drawing

This course is suitable for absolute beginners or anyone keen to refresh their drawing skills.
Material List
- Lead pencils 3b and 6b (or thereabouts)
- White plastic eraser H
- Hardback a4 sketchbook or regular drawing paper
- Approx 3 sheets A2 cartridge paper per class
- Box medium width willow charcoal
- 1 stick compressed charcoal (round shape)
- Box of 12 (kids) oil pastels available at Office works

Our class sizes are small, ensuring you receive the individual tuition you need. We have a maximum of 12 students per class.
