This workshop is an excellent starting point in drawing and painting in acrylics for absolute beginners. This 3-day bootcamp is a condensed, step-by-step course for beginners looking to grasp foundational drawing and painting skills. Our aim is to equip you with the confidence and strategies needed to pursue further art studies or work independently.
The course begins with a focus on drawing. You'll learn fundamental techniques like line, tone, and gestural drawing, covering aspects such as sighting/proportion, perspective, and form. Through a combination of fast and sustained exercises, along with drawing games, you'll gain the skills to draw both simple and complex subjects.
Moving on to painting, you'll delve into color mixing, matching and identification, as well as organising your palette and workspace. You'll also refine your brush handling techniques and learn how to apply paint effectively.
What to expect
Each day students will learn new concepts and techniques.
- Day 1 - Drawing in pencil, charcoal, ink
- Day 2 - Drawing + intro to acrylic paint + colour theory
- Day 3 - Acrylic Painting
Students can expect to:
- Learn foundational drawing skills using a variety of drawing materials and approaches
- Learn foundational painting skills working from simple still life objects and studio props including fabrics, glass and metal
- Learn names and approaches for paint application techniques, different brush shapes and purposes
- Learn to organise your acrylic paint palette, basic colour theory including making your own colour wheel
- Learn traditional and contemporary approaches to painting including Grisaille tonal underpainting and Alle Prima techniques
- On day 3 students will be offered a sustained painting project to practice working in stages/layers and glazes with introduction to basic mediums
Is this class right for me?
This 3-day bootcamp is an excellent starting point for complete beginners or anyone wanting to learn essential drawing skills, refresh existing knowledge or learn new skills in painting with acrylics.
There are no pre-requisites or assumed knowledge required for this class. All welcome.
Materials
Included in the course fee is the use of our drawing materials, acrylic paints, mediums, palettes, brushes, and surfaces (paper, canvas or canvas paper).
However, if you have your own art kit with drawing materials, acrylic paints, brushes etc that you'd like to use, then by all means bring them along too. But no need to rush out and buy them - this is a taster workshop with everything supplied to make it easy for you. By using our paints, we also ensure that everyone is mixing their colours using the same primary acrylic paints.
Please bring the following:
- bring some soft rags and/or roll of paper kitchen towels
- bring a notebook and pencil, rubber, sharpener
