Drawing the Figure from Life Beginner to Intermediate with Dominique Millar

Course overview

Enjoy learning to draw the figure from life in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Students will be introduced to the basics of human anatomy as it relates to life drawing, learning about skeletal structure and muscle masses of the human body. Learn about line, form, tone, gesture and more gaining confidence and building skills as the course progresses. Every second week will focus on critical reproductions of classical drawings, which will then inform the following week’s drawing from the life model.

This is a new course with Dominique Millar who has taught life drawing and painting at Julian Ashton Art School, CK Gallery and WEA.

Course Outline

Week 1, 3, 5 and 7 will examine four academy drawings, with the aim of critically reproducing their articulation of gestural action, proportion, artistic anatomy and shaded rendering. Many of the challenges students find in the formal areas of drawing the figure will become comprehensible by a close study of artists of the highest historical competence in the field of life drawing. Weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8 will seek to thoughtfully apply the lessons learnt in the preceding week to a living model, whose pose and lighting in class will aim to mirror the drawing studied as closely as is possible.
