Online | Cartoon Slam for Kids | 10 years and over

Words and Pictures is a course aimed at igniting the imagination of budding authors and illustrators. This course is lead by professional comic writer and illustrator Sam McNair. It includes a mix of writing, drawing, discussions and games. The intended outcome is to engage critical thinking skills, imagination and productivity. This course is aimed at improving visual literacy and above all having fun. Each term of Words and Pictures focuses on a different story archetype.

What to expect

Our online classes are delivered by tutors in real-time where students can follow the same step by step instruction as they’d receive in our studio classes, ask questions and share what they are working on with their zoom class mates. For children’s classes delivered online, you will need to provide your own art materials. Over the term students will:

• Learn to produce stories with pictures.
• Focus on presentation and quality.
• Learn fundamental narrative and story telling skills

Class activities are structured to stimulate student’s imagination, build individual writing and illustration skills, enhance social confidence. Sam’s classes always include games and activities that create a fun and productive learning environment.

Is this course right for my child?

The class is best suited at students in Year 5 at Primary School through to Year 8 at High School.

Recommended Materials

• You will just need a visual diary or drawing book (A4 or A3)
• a fine point black roller ball pen.
• HB pencil + Eraser + sharpener + ruler
• Set of coloured pencils

Your tutor will let you know each week if you need anything special for the next week’s class, but this should be your standard kit each week.

We’re striving to use what you may already have on hand! So don’t hesitate if you don’t have the exact materials, as something similar will do the job just fine.
