During summer Art Est. has fun art workshops for kids 5 years and over where they can explore a range of different art styles and activities. Whether you love working with clay, drawing, painting or printmaking there's bound to be something that captures your imagination.

The New Year Program for kids runs weekdays from Monday 16 January and continues until Wednesday 25 January.

Workshops are 3 hours duration with the morning session 9.30am-12.30pm and afternoons 1.30pm-4.30pm.

We also introduce a new 2 Day Foundations of Art for over 10s who are serious about their art and want to learn essential skills in drawing and painting.

A 3 hour holiday art class is just $50* per person and $200 for the two day Foundations of Art Masterclass.

The course fee includes all materials and everyone takes home a masterpiece! All you need to do is wear old art clothes, bring a drink and a healthy snack, and if you attend for a whole day, pack some lunch as well. (Children doing morning and afternoon sessions are welcome to stay and will be supervised throughout the lunch break).

Inspired by the illustrations of Graeme Base, explore the vibrant colours of the reef through bold and bright oil pastels. Firstly, you'll start by creating a pattern of solid shapes in pastels. Next, you will cover the whole design with paint and then scratch into the paint and like magic, the beautiful colours of the pastels will be revealed and the magic underwater reef will be revealed.

Explore the world of cartooning in this introductory lesson and learn how to draw some of your favourite cartoon characters step by step. Discover how cartoonists create their characters, then add colour. Take home a picture book full of your own colourful cartoon drawings.

Learn simple techniques using shapes and shading to draw your favourite things. A bunch of flowers, a teddy bear or a toy. In this step by step workshop, you'll become aware of the simplest forms that make up all kinds of shapes and objects. Paint a wonderful picture using beautiful chalk pastel crayons and you will be amazed what you can achieve.

In the first part of this session, create a brilliant poster of your favourite cartoon character. Learn the drawing and painting techniques used by the professionals, how to enlarge your character, how to keep things in proportion, how to mix the colours you need and paint them in exactly the right places! You'll then make a small clay sculpture of your favourite character and turn your art into 3D.

This course will cover the basics of drawing and painting for students who are serious about their art and want to learn some real skills while having fun!

Tuesday 17 January - Day 1 will take a traditional approach and teach you essential drawing skills step by step. Learn about form, tone, perspective and negative space, using a variety of mediums including charcoal, pencil and ink. Explore fun drawing exercises that unlock the right side of the brain such as blind contour drawing and upside down drawing.

Wednesday 18 January - Day 2 you will learn about paints and painting materials. Starting with monochromatic paintings of simple still life objects, you will learn methods of applying paint as well as how to create light, shade and volume in your paintings. Students will then progress to painting with colour, learning the fundamentals of colour theory, colour mixing, and uses of complementary colours in painting.

Create a unique necklace, bracelet, ring, key ring, brooch or earrings from simple and easy to acquire materials.  Using vinyl, fabric and copper wire among other materials, make at least three finished pieces of jewellery to take home. In this fun workshop we'll look at some of the wonderful paintings of Vincent van Gogh like Starry Night (pictured right) and explore the beautiful colours, composition and brush strokes of his famous works. Have fun with artistic exploration using paint and pastels. Through painting and drawing you will create your own Van Gogh masterpiece!

This fun workshop will teach kids how to hand build a sculpture from clay. Looking at images of animal sculptures by famous artists students will firstly draw and then sculpt their pet from clay. As these sculptures won't be fired, students will be using an air drying clay which is strong and doesn't require firing.

We'll first look at some paintings by favourite artists such as White Dove and Avocado Tree by Brett Whiteley (right) that have been inspired by exotic and beautiful bird life. Learn about the wild and colourful birds of Australia and enjoy creating an artwork that combines drawing, painting and mixed media.

In this fun, colorful workshop, you will be inspired to create a scene of native Australian animals. Be inspired by kangaroos, possums, goannas, a koala in a tree or even a platypus in a billabong. Many great artists have put their pets in their portraits, just like Frida Kahlo in her painting Me and My Parrots at right. So in this fun workshop you'll get to paint a picture of yourself with your pets too. Bring along some photos of your pets - with or without you in them - and we'll do some drawings first, and then paint a fantastic painting on a canvas to keep.

Looking and discussing the art of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso students will draw and paint on canvas their own version of a Picasso painting. An illumination is the decoration of text on a written page - usually the first letter which has been enlarged. In this workshop we will look at examples of illuminated manuscripts from medieval times and you will design and create your own illuminated letter - of the first initial of your name - using watercolour and gold detailing. Personal images and symbols such as animals, plants or even mythical creatures will be incorporated into your design to create a beautiful and precious artwork.
