| Daytime Art Classes for Adults - Term 1, 2012 | ||

This term we're offering a great range of classes to enable you to immerse yourself and learn new skills in art. Discover the joys of painting, drawing, mixed media and more in small classes of up to 12 students, so you are guaranteed individual attention. All daytime courses during the week are offered between school hours, usually over an 8 week term, with courses also scheduled on Saturday morning or afternoon. Fees are for tuition only, and you will receive a materials list with your enrolment confirmation. Note that all courses offered are subject to a minimum number of enrolments. | Finding your own Way - Painting in Oils or Acrylics | ||

This course is designed to help students find their way into creating their own subject matter and content for paintings. The course it consists of a series of tutor led and student initiated projects catering to the varying range of abilities and interests in different subject matters. It aims to help students build on their ability to work from observation and to then help them use their skills to follow their own visual sensibilities and develop a personal body of work. We will make use of drawings and photographs and your own subject material to develop visual ideas depending on individual students interests. By the end of the course, you will have practised observational drawing/painting skills; practised ways of laying out the palette; explored a variety of brushes; considered and practised formats for laying out a painting; considered opacity and transparency of pigments; learned about colour mixing and transparency and opacity;- worked towards completing several paintings on canvas in your personal expressive way. Suitable for new and continuing students who have some painting experience, but need help with technical aspects and to overcome any creative blocks you may have. Due to the structure of this course, mid term enrolments are possible. |

In this course you will design and complete a painting with a modern and contemporary feel that will complement the style of your home. An exciting 6 weeks of experimentation and fun! Bring along some images of a style of painting you would like to create, or if unsure you can develop ideas with your tutor. We will play with colour and design, focussing on abstract images and patterns. Through the course, we will explore ways to give a fresh and modern feel to a subject matter, referencing some well know modern artists for inspiration. A perfect course for anyone with a blank wall to fill with a modern art piece, or if you simply want to have a go at creating your own unique artworks and don't know where to start. |

This course will send students on an adventure into differing approaches to painting the portrait. Reflecting on styles of portrait artists past and present, students will use a range of new ideas with which to capture the illusive "likeness" of their subject. This course embraces the idea that portraiture is more than the correct arrangement of facial features. Students will explore the use of colour, tone, materiality and composition in portraiture, referencing photographs of your own subjects. Students will gain a strong understanding of the power of colour and composition in portraiture, and will begin to build a personal language with which to express themselves. A great opportunity to paint a portrait of a relative or friend! Students are welcome to work in the medium of their choice such as acrylics or watercolours, or even oils. Suitable for new and continuing students. Some painting experience necessary. |

Sophie Gralton's art is a celebration of the innocence and simple pleasures of childhood. In this eight-week course, students will learn elements of Sophie's style which relies on layering, texture and a sense of re-invention. Painting in oils on collage, students will explore subjects close to them and learn to create beautiful layered artworks on canvas or board, incorporating personal objects and collage materials in their work. Explore your creative potential in this dynamic drawing class. During the 6 week intensive class, students learn about line, form, mass, space and colour by focusing on a different subject every 2 weeks. Subjects include still-life, urban and natural landscape as well as drawing the figure. A range of drawing techniques will be introduced including methods of observation and how to develop an expressive way of working. Students will explore a range of mediums including charcoal, graphite, ink, chalk pastel and watercolour. Each class begins with quick gestural drawings, students will then work on a sustained drawing. This course is suitable for all levels of experience. |

This is a progressive and fun course exploring all kinds of mixed media materials and subjects for drawing and painting, to create interesting texture in your artworks. You will cover quick and exciting painting techniques, textures, collage, faux finishes, distressing of metal leafs. The course covers "Make Your Colours Pop" - painting bright and vibrant still life study of flowers, fruits and teapots, etc. Included in the course is one week of sketching the nude female life model which will become your reference for a later project to complete a beautiful gold leaf and mixed media project on canvas. The course concludes with a contemporary landscape painting.. Each student will learn freedom of expression, have fun working with various mediums and techniques. Take home finished paintings and a wealth of knowledge to use in the future. |

Pina will work through a series of creative drawing approaches, explain structural anatomy and open up a range of visual analytical approaches to give students a strong foundation to their drawing practice. This course will look at two distinct approaches to painting; the alla prima technique (completing a painting in one sitting) and building up a painting in several layers. We will discuss the fundamentals of composition, light, tone, colour and expression as they relate to these two approaches including techniques for underpainting, working with a limited palette and working with opaque and transparent paints. Students will complete four small paintings using the alla prima technique and one larger painting, built up in layers. The choice of subject is up to the student. The first class we will be working from a still life object so bring a few items that you might like to paint (flowers, fruit, bowls, pots etc). Bring a canvas 40cmx40cm or smaller and whatever oil or acrylic paints and brushes you already have – materials will be discussed in the first class so don’t buy anything especially until then. |

| Traditional Etching in a Contemporary Way | ||

This three part workshop will be an introduction to and a demonstration of the application of several colour intaglio processes using safe etching techniques. Secondly, to explore the skills required in the production of a Limited Edition Original fine Art Prints. You will be guided through the indirect methods of etching on aluminium plates. Create your own personal visual imagery in a SAFER printmaking environment. With humour and support, the tutor will have a range of techniques for you to try, gaining full understanding of each process. Learn about different approaches, through discussions, demonstrations and hands on plate-making and printing.
