Holiday Art Workshops at Art Est.

Our January school holiday art program has many creative workshops to choose from. You could learn to paint like Monet or Van Gogh! Try screenprinting your own t-shirt or tea-towel. Explore something new in sculpture or try some creative collage.

Each art activity is a 3 hour workshop from 10.00am-1.00pm or 2.00pm-5.00pm.

Each workshop is $50 per person, including materials and everyone takes home a complete artwork. If you would like to book in for two courses on the one day, children are welcome to bring their lunch and will be supervised during the break.

'Mix and Match' at least five sessions between one or more children to receive a 10% discount!

Making African masks from clay

 

African mask sculpting with Ochre

Make your own mask inspired by ancient tribal masks of Africa. Students will look at traditional African mask making, and will then make their own mask from clay. They will use techniques of adding, shaping, stamping and incising to create designs. The finished mask will look fantastic as an artwork on your wall.

Batik making with Sally

Discover the traditional technique of Batik and create a unique artwork. Batik is a traditional fabric dyeing process that uses a technique called wax resist. Using wax and fabric dyes you will create a colourful and practical artwork on a calico bag that's perfect as a library bag, shoe bag, shopping bag or even a beach bag.

We will focus on composition, colour-blending techniques, drawing and creating different effects using the wax. Students will be introduced to the art of different cultures to inspire and enthuse.

Print out your favourite digital photographs and bring them into class. Angie will show you how to create hilarious portraits of your friends or family with huge heads and little bodies.

We’ll cut up your images using a big mouth from one image and little eyes from another. We’ll even extend your cut-out photographed hair into outer space using basic collage techniques of shrinking and exaggeration. You best mate will look like a freaky alien by the time we’ve finished! To create that feeling of perspective we’ll paint a background to stick your character on to. It could be another planet or the school playground. Your imagination is key!

Studying the wild and exotic animals of the jungle, such as tigers, elephants, giraffes and zebras, students will make a colourful collage using mixed media and drawing techniques. We will look at artists such as Henri Rousseau who were inspired by the jungle and have fun creating our own unique scenes.

A look into the colourful world of Van Gogh and his uniquely recognisable painting style!

“I live to paint” - Vincent van Gogh

This class will look at the paintings Vincent did while living in Arles including “Sunflowers in a Vase”, “Cafe terrace at Night”, “The Yellow House”, “Vincent’s chair with pipe” and “Self-portrait with bandaged Ear”. Discussing the content of Vincent’s paintings and “The everyday” the class will paint a small canvas study “after Vincent”. Images provided!

Looking at different sea creatures you will make a mobile to hang in your bedroom using mixed media such as metallic papers and recycled materials. You will learn to draw some incredible underwater sea animals and make them into hanging shapes. The art of sculptor Alexander Calder will inspire children to create interesting artworks looking at shape, colour and balancing the final work as a mobile

Have you ever tried to create a character as a shadow using your hands, such as a barking dog or a flying bird? This is a bit like shadow puppetry. Shadow puppets are easy to make and are one of the most fun ways to bring a story to life in a performance. Inspired by the tradition of shadow puppetry you will create your own characters and create a story together with other students. Put your character in front of an illuminated backdrop to create an illusion of moving images. All you need is lots of imagination.

Sculpture a 3D Picture

Learn how to make a 3D picture (bas relief) using clay and plaster of Paris.  Using a clay base we will design a picture of your home or streetscape using different tools and found objects.  Into this is poured plaster of Paris and within half an hour you will have a finished work!  This can then be painted or left the colour of plaster (white).  You will end up with a fabulous relief sculpture to hang on your wall.

Create beautiful cards, bookmarks and artwork printed on an etching press. This is a practical printmaking class for students which introduces a variety of simple, safe and effective techniques.

Why not design a colourful bookmark, a set of cards you can use or give to someone special as a gift, or an artwork to frame. And because they're all made on an etching press, you can keep one for yourself and give the others away!
